The Reckless Youth Worker

All hustle, no huddle that’s reckless – TEAM, Andy Mineo, Wordsplayed, BEAM, Magic and Bird

I was listening to my most listened to tracks of 2018 on Spotify and the Andy Mineo/Wordsplayed track TEAM come up. Obviously it resonated with me, not just because of the sick beat but because of the message. You see, by nature, am a loner. I always have been.

Since I was a kid, and an only child, I had the imagination to be able to play by myself for hours. That is not to say I didn’t need friends, I just could get along without them if necessary.

This flying solo mentally eventually bled into my adult life. Because I could think for myself and operate independently of others, team work was not required. As a youth pastor, all hustle and no huddle was reckless. It hurt my productivity and my reach in doing good ministry for the glory of God.  I had to rethink how to lead, but with a team.

I, eventually, figured it out. I had been missing the blessing of team work, collaboration, and winning as a team.

There is a saying that goes, If you want to travel fast, travel alone. If you want to travel far, find a team. I did things on my own terms, my way, and fast. This was great, until I found myself doing much of the work alone. Burnout was not far behind.

The chorus of the song TEAM could be my testimony,

Chorus

Nobody can’t do it dem self

It don’t work

Mi try dat already, eh

Two put ten thousand to flight, eh

No man a island in life

Nobody can’t do it dem self

It don’t work

Mi done dat already, eh

Two put ten thousand to flight, eh

A three stranded cord holds its blind

The reckless youth worker says

I can do it myself

I don’t need anyone else

I am self contained

If you think this, you’re not only hurting yourself, but the community you serve. Find a network of youth worker you can hang with, talk with, and pray with. It will extend your time in youth ministry and bring joy to your life.

If you don’t have a network near you, I’d like to invite you to my team. I have an ongoing coaching group called Ministry Mind. We meet twice a month to work on each others projects, do some skill building and encourage one another on our journey’s

If this sounds like something you might be interested in you can hit me up with any questions at [email protected] or you can head over to the sign up page and get started.

Don’t be reckless, let’s huddle up.
